In Memoriam: Peter Consandine: Australian Grassroots Republican

Peter Consandine founded The Republican Party of Australia [RPA] with four other Australian colleagues on 10 January 1982.

He was the mainstay of the Party — the other four having either passed away or moved on to separate challenges over the years.

Peter — as the National Executive Director of The RPA — earnestly believed that Australia must have a discernible national identity, and that this ideal could only be achieved when Australians became Heads of State. This indubitably meant that Australia should dispense with having aristocrats from another country represent us.

Peter was a committed republican and, thereby, a passionate advocate for his fellow Australians being collectively sovereign.
