The Hon J E Gillard
Prime Minister of Australia
Canberra ACT 2600
Re: Playing the REPUBLICAN CARD
Dear Prime Minister,
Others may not have taken much notice, but over the past year or so I have observed the kite-flying antics by, firstly, your former Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, and secondly by your Treasurer, Wayne Swan: making soundings about gearing towards an Australian Republic sooner rather than later.
My surmise would be that if you asked your Minister for Trade, Craig Emerson, to stir up the issue from another Labor govt quarter then he would bung on another one of his ridiculous political song & dance routines.
The matter of the Australian Republic is not to be trifled with. Nor is it to be subjected to fanciful and distracting rhetoric by the clowns of your govt let alone those rats who have announced that they are deserting the proverbial sinking ship later on this election year.
You and your re-election team have patently begun tossing many balls into the air in an ALL Get-Out campaign to be seen to be ‘getting things done’. I can well understand your desire to cling on to the trappings of power for just as long as you can BUT not everything is do-able by a minority govt and I would verily say unto you that, with your propensity for making perpetually bad judgement calls, there have been just far too many stuff-ups/cock-ups/balls-ups during your prime ministership.
I know full-well that you are a Republican, PM, but so are 99.9% of Labor Party members. However, hitherto you have declared that the Labor govt you led would ONLY move for a Republic once the queen dies – the very same line espoused by your four Labor PM predecessors: Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and K-Rudd.
I therefore urge you to NOT be a torpedo for the Australian Republic and to NOT play the Republican Card as one of your last acts of despicable desperation or as a potential ‘game-changer’ issue in the coming general election.
Please leave well enough alone, PM. Please leave we long-term, sincere and dedicatedly thorough grass roots republicans with at least one untainted policy of national pre-eminence and importance to prosecute and promote once the Australian electorate has voted you out of Office &/or the Victorian Major Fraud & Extortion Detective Squad have charged you with (possibly 4) serious indictable white collar crimes – or has even merely interviewed you regarding what is now known in the Commentariat as the AWU/Slater & Gordon/Bruce Wilson Affair.
